The Little Things

The big picture person - daydreaming about the mountain top whilst lying at its feet. Dreams are good - without vision there is no hope. But without action, dreams remain dreams.

He who has a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. - Proverbs 10:4

We can so easily slip into autopilot, fast-forwarding through the day just to tick boxes. But precision is the difference between completion and success. Slow down, dear reader, and focus on what you are doing right now. Whether you’re at the office busy with a task, at home spending time with your family, or singing in church. How you do one thing is how you do everything.

Be present. LIVE in the moment. Not only because we experience this day just once - but because we are always capable of learning, growing, and reaching higher ground.

He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. - Luke 16:10

The little things form habits. Habits build character. And character is what Heaven measures. It is how you are known - and it matters deeply to God. An easy way to strengthen your character is to imagine doing everything for Him. Reply to an email as if replying to the Lord. Greet people as if greeting Him. Double-check your work before submission as if submitting it to Heaven. Serve others as if serving the Lord. Before you know it, you will be known as a person of integrity, diligence, kindness, intelligence and trustworthiness - someone the Lord Himself will promote.

And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, - Colossians 3:23

Sometimes we look at others and wonder how they became so prosperous, so loved, so confident. Truth is, the people you admire were babies once. Yes - that was meant to be funny. They had to learn how to walk and talk, just like you. We reach higher ground by refining our daily habits - baby steps. Visualise the end goal, but focus on the task at hand. Do it as if you were created to do this one thing. Because the next thing is not here yet.

There will be no future promotion without present faithfulness.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. - Matthew 6:33

The world offers endless self-help books, life coaches and twelve-step strategies. But we know something deeper - we were created for fellowship with our Maker. That is our highest calling and greatest purpose.

Therefore, the best little thing you can do today is spend time with God. Invite Him into your work. Into your conversations. He delights in being involved in your “little things”. That is how good character is formed - by His hand. That is how you bear fruit that blesses not only you, but everyone around you.

And by the way, the mountain top is not your final destination. It is simply a place you will visit many times in this life. Learn to dance even in the valleys - because the Lord is there too. The greatest moments in life are not waiting on mountain tops. They are hidden in ordinary Tuesdays - disguised in these little things.
